Less than a week - It's less than a week until we head abroad and the nerves haven't kicked in with such a large to do list hanging over our heads. Week 6 - The weeks appear to be going by quicker and quicker now... too quick for my liking. Half way through already. With regards to the children's home our role was to set goals for each of the individual children and work alongside them to achieve thier goals by our final week of placement. With us being half way through I reviewed the goals I set and feel on target for the children to reach their goa

Joshua Tree National Park - Going it alone Joshua TreeAfter such a long drive to Twentynine Palms on Good Friday I took it easy on the Saturday. I was very relaxed and happy even though I again had to share the breakfast room with families. Spring break seems to go on for ever in the USA. Some schools had their Spring Break about a month ago but all the Christain faith schools are apparently having theirs at Easter

Manila's Chinatown Jeepney Rides Comfort Food and Shopping Bargains - It is your little China right here in Manila. THE OLDEST CHINATOWN IN THE WORLD. Outside of China of course. From the walled city of Intramuros where the ruling Spaniards ruled our Chinoys ChineseFilipinos aka Tsinoys were forced

It Floats - The bridge over the Aguan river to Trujillo has been out for 8 months but nobody bothered to tell us. Hazel and I faithfully followed our map and signs showing us the way to a bridge that is no more. Here we were confronted with a backwards queue of a dozen vehicles waiting to cross the river on a makeshift ferry. I was dumbstruck. The scene before me was bizarre to the point of being incompre

Rio Cangrejal - Marco picked out a place to stay that was just outside of La Ceiba on a bumpy dirt road along the Rio Cangrejal. It was a good base for a kayaking trip that Marco was keen to try. It was also a fun place to stay. The food was good and the drunken expats at the bar were both entertaining and informative. I got to camp on one of their wooden platforms for only 5 since I had my own tent. Marco

Finger Lakes October 2010 - Here are pictures from our trip to the finger lakes over the fall. We first went up to Shawn's grand father's place in Erin and then drove up to Ithaca and the surrounding finger lakes. My parents were visiting and we stopped at several wineries. Copan - I got up early in the morning to walk the kilometer to the ruins. I did not think that these ruins were as impressive as Tikal but the ornate detail is much better preserved here than at the other Mayan ruin sites I have seen. I found Marco in the ruins and confirmed a tentative plan to drive my car to a place called Aguas Calientes with a guide that we had met in town while we were in the proce

Baltimore October 2010 - These are pictures from the fall when parents came to town. We went to Baltimore for the day and toured the inner harbor. I think it is a very underrated area. We could see the Domino Sugar sign. Very neat. We then went to a s

Amtrak Southwest Chief Kansas City - The train left Albuquerque on time and spent nearly eighteen hours winding its way through mountain passes and along the side of valleys of New Mexico before heading straight along the flat landscape of Colorado right through the middle of the USA. I bet photography of the train on its journey would look amazing. It stopped at tiny towns like Raton NM and Trinidad CO. New Mexico was sunny and d

Taiwan Trip Day 3 - The high speed rail in Taiwan is just amazing. A few years back OK more than a few.... when we went to Kenting for graduation trip it took literally a whole day to get there. We were back in Taipei after a 1.5 hour train rideI would say the biggest thing about traveling to Taiwan is eat. There are probably plenty of sights to see that are interesting but really nobody should waste their time

Upstate New York Winter 2011 - We went up to Erin New York where Shawn's grandfather lives. It was the last weekend in February and still the dead of winter. We drove up from Erin to Ithaca. Along the lakes there is a waterfall called Tunkhannock Falls. We saw this waterfall last fall when all the leaves were changing around it. It is just as beautiful frozen in winter. I love this area. We go to Ithaca at least a few times a

Red Rocks climbing and fabulous Las Vegas - In Las Vegas angekommen brauchten wir erst einmal einen Kletterfuehrer fuer die Red Rocks einige Meilen westlich von Las Vegas. Rickets Glenn Spring 2011 - We spent Good Friday hiking in Rickets Glenn again. This time the snow had thawed and we did 3 12 miles of a 7 mile trail. We had intended to do the full 7 but took a wrong turn and ended up back at the car early. We did get to see a ton of waterfalls. The trail is in a canyon that you hike into. It is narrow and steep as you hike along the falls. It looks like a scene out Middle Earth in Lord o

I gave up after a couple of hours. The only positive aspect of that venture was to learn the route to the bus station for m

Rickets Glenn Winter 2011 - We hiked back into Rickets Glenn State Park. The park is closed in the winter but they allow ice hikers to hike back into it. Believe me these pictures do not do it justice. It is one of the best things we have ever done. We wanted to

Replicas of the two tanks that first broke through the gates back in 1975 now adorn the lawns of the palace. The place was built in the 60s which remains evident in the distinctive arc

Around Thailand like a PingPong Ball - Arriving in Thailand from Vientiane was a little bit like being Michael J Fox in Back to the Future it was like we boarded the time machine on the tiny propelled plane and we were catapulted back into the 21st Century. I imagine that we will get a similar feeling when we finally arrive back in the UK in September. Bangkok airport is the land of the advanced and I was so happy to see Boots. As som

Don Det 4000 Islands Laos - We could have stayed in Vang Vieng for another week but our time in Laos was running out we wanted to go South to the 4000 Islands that is near the border to Cambodia were the river shallows and has created many islands both big and small. There are only a few islands that you can stay on and we picked a place called 'Don Det' which is one of the bigger islands. It really is back to 'basics' here

Fine art boring pots and Agent Orange - We shall gloss over 15 hours on a plane sitting in front of an obese man who's snoring made me want to punch him repeatedly in the face. Mind you I'd have had to have joined the queue. His every blissful snooze sounded like a really overacted death rattle you could practically hear the sucking vaccuum in his sinuses. His wife sat heaxt to him with a peculiarly fixed expression on her face.

Mountains and Beaches Again - There is always a danger of coming back to someplace you really like in case the old rose tinted glasses have been taking effect. This is pretty much the case with the whole of Vietnam for us but especially the delightful mountain city of Delat. Again after the humid heat of Saigon the cool mountain air was most welcomed and as we came into the city the first thing that struck us was the amount

Friday weekend woo - Got up and ready for work today I wore jeans a tee and a sweater JUST in case we had mroe construction to do. Turns out we did not so it was more of a casual Friday. That brings me to an earlyon CULTURE NOTE Fashion. China is becoming increasingly involved in fashion not just making sweatshop quality Tshirts. Shanghai is a MAJOR fashion centre and Beijing has it's own fashion and design d

Vang Vieng Laos - So we left Vientiane to go up North to a place called Vang Vieng. We had a 4 hour mini bus journey through the winding roads of Laos driving through the villages seeing children playing in the school play ground wild cows just walking into the road cars having to swerve out the way to miss them. Then up through the mountains the views are amazing the higher we get. These bus rides are not the mo
