"GW Pharmaceuticals plc announces the initiation of the Phase III clinical trials programme of Sativex in the treatment of pain in patients with advanced cancer, who experience inadequate analgesia during optimized chronic opioid therapy," GW said in a statement. "This indication represents the initial target indication for Sativex in the United States." Sativex is the brand name for a drug derived from cannabis sativa. It's an extract from the whole plant cannabis, not a synthetic compound. Even GW defines the drug as marijuana. Yet as the FDA is poised to approve the drug for Big Pharma, state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries that provide relief for thousands of Americans are under attack by other federal agencies... The trouble with pharma's extracts is that - more often than not - they are missing some important synergy that's present in the original plant material, as they standardize for only one or a few of what they call the "active ingredients". So for instance they can turn a marijuana extract into a fairly effective pain medicine by emphasizing certain cannabinoids and discarding other substances, and in the process they lose the anti-cancer and other major healing properties of the plant. It's a very clever but covert way of getting rid of any competition from natural substances. Take it over to sell yourself, but ruin its most important effects in the process. New York Times: Is Sugar Toxic? On May 26, 2009, Robert Lustig gave a lecture called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” which was posted on YouTube the following July. Since then, it has been viewed well over 800,000 times, gaining new viewers at a rate of about 50,000 per month, fairly remarkable numbers for a 90-minute discussion of the nuances of fructose biochemistry and human physiology. A change in political allegiances excluded the Greens from Ireland's governing coalition and so the country's stance of GMO was reversed again. Brendan Smith from the ruling Fianna Fáil party, confirmed in a statement on April 19th, 2011 that Ireland has changed its voting position and will now support a number of EU Commission proposals designed to allow the marketing of GM food for human consumption, animal feed and food ingredients. While private foundations adopt standard disclosure protocols for employees to mitigate potential conflicts of interests, these do not always apply to the overall endowment investments of the foundations or to board membership appointments. The extent and range of relationships between tax-exempt foundations and for-profit corporations suggest that transparency or grant-making recusal of employees alone may not be preventing potential conflicts of interests between global health programs and their financing. Aspartame - the EU Health Authorities' 'Fools Game' - Health Supreme NewsGrabs 17 April 2011 - ASPARTAME: The European Health authorities play a fools game Two members of the European Parliament organized a seminar on the possible dangers of Aspartame, the controversal artificial sweetener manufactured first by Searle and now by the Japanese Ajinomoto. Aspartame is present in thousands of products, including a few hundred medicines, particularly meds for children. Studies have shown it to be associated with cancer and other deleterious health effects. Aspartame consumers have told horror stories of its effects. Yet, our health authorities show no will to warn consumers or even to pro-actively look into aspartame's effects. Corinne Lepage expressed her shock "by the failure to examine the subject more thoroughly, and the close links that have been established between industry, the EFSA and the Commission, each one passing the buck to the others. This attitude has meant that looking at the health effects of aspartame is no longer taken seriously." For Antonyia Parvanova, "Aspartame is a substance to which millions of consumers are exposed on a daily basis. For this reason, and even if there is only a hint of risk, the European health authorities should commit themselves proactively to the gathering of data and the supervision of complementary and independent studies, instead of being passive and waiting for additional data to come to them". Artificial sweeteners: Should we be afraid of Aspartame ? This is a long video (one hour and 55 minutes) and it is the complete recrd of a seminar organized by ALDE, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, at the European Parliament on 16 March 2011. The first speaker is Dr Morando Soffritti of the Ramazzini Research Foundation in Bologna, Italy, who presents experiments conducted at the institute that showed aspartame to be associated with increased incidence of certain cancers in laboratory animals. Thorhallur Halldorsson of the University of Iceland relates of a study that found a 30 to 80 % increase in pre-term delivery in pregnant women in Denmark who consumed artificially sweetened soft drinks. Hugues Kenigswald of the Unit supporting the scientific panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Foods - ANS, of the European Food Safety Authority, explained how aspartame has been evaluated by the EFSA and its predecessor, the Scientific Committee for Foods (SCF), stating that "further studies are needed". In the second part of the discussions the question is: Should the precautionary principle be applied to aspartame use as an additive. The tone is set by A.G. Renwick a scientist working for the International Sweeteners Association who points to an "enormous and comprehensive safety database on aspartame", and assures participants that aspartame is one of the best evaluated and most studied substances. He adds that the new studies - both of the Ramazzini Institute and the Iceland University researchers - do not give any reason to be preoccupied. Lynn Insall of the CIAA (Food and Drink Industry Association) also calls aspartame the "most studied food additive" used at safe levels, and she adds that aspartame allows the drink industry to provide for consumer choice. Laurent Chevallier from France talks about risk/benefit analysis saying aspartame is not effective in weight loss, and since there are a lot of warning signs, EFSA should very well review and challenge the early studies that were used to set the acceptable daily intake for aspartame. He criticizes EFSA's handling of the controversal sweetener. Katrien Renders of a Dutch consumer group does not add much to the specific discussion of Aspartame. She makes it clear however that there are strong feelings on the consumer side about the safety of additives. Concluding speaker is Michael Flueh, Head of the Chemicals, contaminants and pesticides unit of the European Commission's Health and Consumers Directory (SANCO). He states aspartame has been re-evaluated various times, and that the Commission will continue to monitor the scientific literature. He denies that there is a need to intervene at the present time. The discussion shows how, once an additive has been approved, it is just about impossible to have it comprehensively re-considered, even in the face of studies that show there are problems or in the face of "anecdotal" evidence from doctors or the consuming public. The Members of the EU Parliament who organized the seminar, Corinne Lepage of France and Antonyia Parvanova of Bulgaria, do criticize the officials present for not taking their part of responsibility for protecting the public from possible damage. Silica and titanium dioxide nanoparticles cause pregnancy complications in mice Here, we show that silica and titanium dioxide nanoparticles with diameters of 70 nm and 35 nm, respectively, can cause pregnancy complications when injected intravenously into pregnant mice. The silica and titanium dioxide nanoparticles were found in the placenta, fetal liver and fetal brain. Mice treated with these nanoparticles had smaller uteri and smaller fetuses than untreated controls. Fullerene molecules and larger (300 and 1,000 nm) silica particles did not induce these complications. Just learning, we are ... those two substances as normal elements (larger particles) have no adverse health effects, but it seems that the nano configuration is different... Monsanto Sued By Organic Farmers Who Don't Want To Be Accused Of Patent Infringement Now, a group of organic farmers fearful of being hit with similar threats and/or lawsuits have preemptively sued Monsanto asking for a declaratory judgment that they don't infringe, while also seeking to invalidate the patents. The full filing, embedded below, includes a description of why the farmers think that Monsanto's patents are invalid anyway, including the claim that Monsanto's modified seeds were not actually "useful" (it cites multiple studies debunking claims by Monsanto of the advantages of its seeds) and therefore, not patentable (since, in theory, patents are only allowed on "useful" inventions). Should make for an interesting case, though I would guess it won't get very far... GMOs Linked to Organ Disruption in 19 Studies A new paper shows that consuming genetically modified (GM) corn or soybeans leads to significant organ disruptions in rats and mice, particularly in livers and kidneys. By reviewing data from 19 animal studies, Professor Gilles-Eric Séralini and others reveal that 9% of the measured parameters, including blood and urine biochemistry, organ weights, and microscopic analyses (histopathology), were significantly disrupted in the GM-fed animals. The kidneys of males fared the worst, with 43.5% of all the changes. The liver of females followed, with 30.8%. The report, published in Environmental Sciences Europe on March 1, 2011, confirms that "several convergent data appear to indicate liver and kidney problems as end points of GMO diet effects." The authors point out that livers and kidneys "are the major reactive organs" in cases of chronic food toxicity. Chinese ministry, WHO warn of antibiotic overuse Antibiotics can spur infection-causing bacteria to become drug-resistant if they are overused. Drug-resistant tuberculosis can also arise when people take substandard medicines, a common problem in China. It takes longer to treat than regular TB and requires more expensive drugs, which also cause bad side effects such as liver damage. "Infections caused by resistant microorganisms often fail to respond to conventional treatment, resulting in prolonged illness and greater risk of death," O'Leary said. He said that action was needed now because new drugs cannot be developed fast enough to replace the drugs that have lost their effectiveness. US Government: Phase out Dental Mercury - Health Supreme NewsGrabs 11 April 2011 - U.S. Government Calls for the Phase-out of Dental Mercury Amalgam... In an extraordinary development that will change the global debate about amalgam, the United States government has announced that it supports a “phase down, with the goal of eventual phase out by all Parties, of mercury amalgam.” This statement - a radical reversal of its former position [denying] that “any change toward the use of dental amalgam is likely to result in positive public health outcomes” – - is part of the U.S. government’s submission for the upcoming third round of negotiations for the world mercury treaty. United Nations Urged to Ban Mercury in Vaccines While the United Nations actively questions the use of vaccines containing a neurotoxic mercury compound, the Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs, a Maryland-based, non-profit organization, is urging the UN to ban it. A CoMeD analysis has shown that replacing Thimerosal, a compound that is 50% bioaccumulative mercury by weight, with 2-phenoxyphenol in all vaccines, including the flu shot, is both economical and safer. Additionally, CoMeD has sued the FDA for its failure to comply with the law and enforce preservative safety regulations. The Health Hazards of "Disease Prevention" There are no studies comparing vaccine safety to a genuine placebo. The only study that claims to do so compared active vaccines to a placebo containing all the adjuvants, including neomycin (a known neurotoxin). Research shows: Fluoridation does not work Haines has found in the ARCPOH statistics that the permanent teeth of children in largely unfluoridated (less than 5% before 2009) Queensland were erupting on average two years earlier than the children in the rest of Australia, which is largely fluoridated. A two-year delay would negate all the small reductions in tooth decay claimed by dental researchers since 1990. In other words fluoridation doesn't work. Any difference in tooth decay claimed to be due to fluoride is simply an artifact of the delayed eruption caused by fluoride. Vitamin D levels linked with health of blood vessels A lack of vitamin D, even in generally healthy people, is linked with stiffer arteries and an inability of blood vessels to relax, research from the Emory/Georgia Tech Predictive Health Institute has found. The results add to evidence that lack of vitamin D can lead to impaired vascular health, contributing to high blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Study participants who increased their vitamin D levels were able to improve vascular health and lower their blood pressure. Pregnant women at risk of Vitamin D deficiency An editorial written by Professor Peter Ebeling of the University of Melbourne and Western Health, identifies pregnant women as a high risk group for getting vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy and other related diseases such as gestational diabetes, putting both mother and baby at risk. “Evidence has accumulated linking vitamin D deficiency to adverse outcomes in pregnancy, such as preeclampsia, hypertension, higher rates of caesarean section and pre-term delivery,” he said. He said gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), is increasingly becoming more common, affecting up to 10% of pregnancies. “Current evidence strongly supports routine screening for vitamin D deficiency early in pregnancy,” he said. “Furthermore, vitamin D supplementation to correct deficiency should be initiated early in pregnancy to help strengthen bones in babies and because it might reduce the incidence or severity of GDM. Study helps confirm effectiveness of intravenous vitamin C in fighting cancer Among its various findings, the study suggests that ascorbic acid, an isolated form of vitamin C, may help to protect endothelial cells from chronic stress. Several sources cited in the study also suggest that cancer patients generally lack adequate vitamin C levels, for which higher levels of disease-causing inflammation are a result. Cited references in the study also showed that high-dose vitamin C is even linked to actually stopping the growth of tumors and causing them to shrink. When the drugs don't work Antibiotic-resistant bugs like MRSA and C. difficile tend to be picked up by patients in hospitals, but the risks are far broader than a hospital stay. Take the story of the 100 or so Swedes who went traveling to different parts of the world and were tracked by scientists to see what bugs they brought home. Of the eight who went to India, seven -- that's 88 percent -- came back with bacteria in their guts that were resistant to a whole class of antibiotics called cephalosporins. Not one of the people in the study had been in a doctor's clinic or hospital while they were there -- indicating the superbugs they picked up were freely circulating in the community. How long will it take us to realize that we are doing this to ourselves. We have for-profit medicine and for-profit drug making, which means that any use for a drug that is conceivable is going to be pushed. Antibiotics are a case in point. Genetically modified cows produce 'human' milk The scientists have successfully introduced human genes into 300 dairy cows to produce milk with the same properties as human breast milk. The scientists behind the research believe milk from herds of genetically modified cows could provide an alternative to human breast milk and formula milk for babies, which is often criticised as being an inferior substitute. While it is rapidly immobilized in the soil because it binds with those nutrients, glyphosate can remain in plants and soils for a very long time — up to 22 years in clay soils, Huber contends. “It’s not just put it on the soil and ‘poof!’, it’s gone. It’s there for a very long time,” Huber told the Wisconsin grazing audience. The team saw for the first time that when cholesterol is present, these tails line up in a tight formation, looking like a narrow stripe from which the lipid chains stretch outward—and producing the order that had been previously anticipated, but never shown directly. But without cholesterol, the tails go a bit wild, flapping around energetically and in some cases even pushing up toward their chains’ heads. Mihailescu says the findings hint that cholesterol may have profound consequences for the membrane’s gatekeeper proteins, which are very sensitive to their environment. Magnesium Deficiency Increases Diabetes Risk The study found that those patients with lower fasting and after-meal blood glucose levels had higher blood magnesium levels while those patients with higher fasting glucose levels had lower blood magnesium levels and higher urine levels of magnesium. A full 82% of the diabetics studied showed that magnesium intake was insufficient with the lowest levels found in those with kidney complications. About 62% of the patients had low blood levels of magnesium. The researchers noted that because magnesium is so vital to energy supply and utilization in the body, they were not surprised to find that lower levels of magnesium in the blood lead to metabolic malfunctions such as diabetes. They also concluded that the impaired kidney function connected with diabetes mellitus might explain the higher levels of magnesium in the urine, which combined with insufficient magnesium intake, caused the high blood sugar levels. The Codex Alimentarius Irradiated Food Cover-up The FDA acknowledges the fact that irradiation changes the makeup of food when it says in the same proposal that “Irradiation has various effects on foods that may cause changes in the characteristics of the food. Such changes may occur in the food’s organoleptic, nutritional, or functional properties that would not be noticeable at the point of purchase but could be apparent when consumed or cooked.”[2] Of course, the FDA does not go so far as to say that such changes occur at the genetic level causing cancer and a host of other health problems, or even that the changes are dangerous. In fact, they say that out of all the food allowed to be irradiated by the FDA regulations, there have been no changes. The proposal states, “Currently, we are not aware of any changes to the nutritional properties of any food FDA has approved for irradiation.”[3] Though not a direct contradiction, it seems highly suspect that irradiation is known to cause “changes” in food; so well known that the FDA is forced to admit it, yet it is unaware of any changes to the foods which it allows to be irradiated. In a CAFO, animals are crammed by the thousands or tens of thousands, often unable to breathe fresh air, see the light of day, walk outside, peck at a plants or insects, scratch the earth, or eat a blade of grass. They are notorious breeding grounds for disease and thus overuse antibiotics, and they pollute the environment in terrible ways. FDA Bans 500 Drugs That Have Been On The Market For Decades Recently, the FDA banned 500 prescription drugs that had been on the market and working for years. To be fair, it was really 50-100 drugs, made by different companies, but that just highlights how there was actual competition in the marketplace for these drugs, which has now been removed. For all of the drugs, there is either a high-priced prescription version, or all the small manufacturers have been removed, leaving a virtual monopoly for one or more larger companies, writes David Fuchs. As Techdirt recently discussed, the drug pipeline is running dry, as Big Pharma’s patents are beginning to expire, and the drug companies are freaking out. For years they have been spending more money on research and testing and getting fewer results. This year alone they are going to have 11 patents expire on drugs that bring in approximately $50 billion in revenue to the big pharma firms. Super antioxidant protects against radiation exposure The compound, known as MnTE-2-PyP, is a form of metalloporphyrin antioxidant that is a more effective version of a naturally occurring antioxidant in the body known as superoxide dismutase. It is thousands of times more potent than antioxidants that are currently available in the United States. MnTE-2-PyP (Mn (III) tetrakis (N- ethylpyridinium-2-yl) porphyrin) is being developed as a protective agent against acute radiation exposure. Does selenium prevent cancer? It may depend on the form Hugh Harris and colleagues note that although the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer clinical trial showed that selenium reduced the risk of cancer, a later study called the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial did not show a benefit. A major difference between the trials was the form of selenium that was used. To find out whether different types of selenium have different chemopreventive properties, the researchers studied how two forms—SeMet (selenomethionine) and MeSeCys (Se-methylselenocysteine)—are processed in human lung cancer cells. A dose of safflower oil each day might help keep heart disease at bay "The women in the study didn't replace what was in their diet with safflower oil. They added it to what they were already doing. And that says to me that certain people need a little more of this type of good fat – particularly when they're obese women who already have diabetes," said Martha Belury, professor of human nutrition at Ohio State University and lead author of the study. "I believe these findings suggest that people consciously make sure they get a serving of healthy oil in their diets each day– maybe an oil and vinegar dressing on a salad, or some oil for cooking. Vitamin A plays multiple roles in the immune system The vitamin A metabolite retinoic acid (RA), along with one of its receptors RAR has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Specifically, RA has been shown to induce production of regulatory T cells that help dampen the immune response to self and foreign antigen, including the bacteria that are normally present in the gastrointestinal tract. However, vitamin A insufficiency is associated with increased mortality to common gastrointestinal and lung infections and poor responses to vaccines, and there is evidence that in addition to its regulatory role, RA may help to stimulate the pro-inflammatory immune response to overcome infection. Is Free Thinking A Mental Illness? Is nonconformity and freethinking a mental illness? According to the newest addition of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it certainly is. The manual identifies a new mental illness called “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD. Defined as an “ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior,” symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed. Prescription Drugs Associated with Reports of Violence Acts of violence towards others are a genuine and serious adverse drug event associated with a relatively small group of drugs. Varenicline, which increases the availability of dopamine, and antidepressants with serotonergic effects were the most strongly and consistently implicated drugs. Prospective studies to evaluate systematically this side effect are needed to establish the incidence, confirm differences among drugs and identify additional common features. Additionally, over 25 percent of physicians in each specialty said they had used omega-3/fish oil supplements, and over 20 percent of each of the three specialty groups said they had taken a botanical supplement in the past year, with green tea being the botanical most frequently mentioned. A new study has found, however, that meta-analyses leave out a crucial bit of information: financial conflicts of interest in the studies they analyze. An alternative to pharmaceutical patents Despite all these negative effects, there are many people who defend pharmaceutical patents, and say they are nevertheless necessary. Dark Times for Herbal Medicine in Europe Under this Directive, all herbal medicinal products are required to obtain an authorization to market within the EU. Those products marketed before this legislation came into force can continue to market their product until April 30, but as of May 1, all herbal medicinal products must have prior authorization before they can be marketed in the EU. Their criteria for authorization don’t sound particularly alarming at first blush, although they do exclude herbal extracts completely—so green tea extract, for example, would not be allowed. But then very specific technical requirements are added which make registering most herbal products very difficult—and expensive. My comment: "At least one of the countries in the EU – Italy – has correctly recognized the intent of the directive on herbal medicines, and has provided a space (as food supplements) for herbal products that do not claim to be medicines. The European herbal medicines directive goes back to a controversy between two of the member states: Germany and the UK. Germany used to have a simple registration procedure for products called “Naturheilmittel” or natural medicines. They were predominantly herbal products sold without prescription in Germany before the turn of the century. The Germans, smart business people they were, sold those natural medicines in the rest of the EU as supplements, but German authorities did not reciprocate to accept supplements from other countries to be sold in Germany. The UK started complaining and demanding that the Germans take their natural medicines off the market as they were not in compliance with (EU) medicines registration laws. The German products were granted some years before having to go off the market. Before the deadline passed, the Germans proposed a new European law, which would allow them to continue registering and selling their natural medicines – the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive or THMPD was born. Its intention was to permit the (simplified) registration of herbal medicines all over the EU. Only, the pharmaceutical lobby made sure that registration was everything BUT simple. Combination herbal medicines were all but impossible to register, Chinese and Indian and any other non-EU herbal medicines were excluded because of a requirement of allowing only traditionally used (IN EUROPE) medicines access to the registration. A real dog’s breakfast, in other words. Still, the intention of the law never was to remove from the market all those herbal products that did not claim to be medicines. The intention was to put a high barrier for herbal medicine registration and to make sure they would be no threat to conventional, pharmaceutical medicines. This was achieved, and herbal medicines in Europe are in disarray. There IS however the possibility of having supplements with herbal ingredients, as shown in Italy, and they may be sold if no medicinal claims are made for them. We speculated that this particular range of frequencies possibly acts upon either some aspect of the SUMOlynation pathway or the ubiquitin pathway associated with telomerase as human studies, performed by Dr. Shealy, indicate a consistent increase in telomere length of leukocyte DNA. In order to qualify this claim a series of primary cell lines isolated from Mus musculus (lab mouse) were subjected to this oscillating frequency for 30 minutes a day for approximately 4 months and telomeric regions were measured via Monochromatic Singleplex QPCR. The results appeared to indicate telomere maintenance and subtle elongation. New Pathogen Found in Roundup Ready GM Crops The letter, written by Don Huber, professor emeritus at Purdue University, to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, warns of a pathogen “new to science” discovered by “a team of senior plant and animal scientists”. Huber says it should be treated as an “emergency’’, as it could result in “a collapse of US soy and corn export markets and significant disruption of domestic food and feed supplies.” The letter appeared to have been written before Vilsack announced his decision to authorize unrestricted commercial planting of GM alfalfa on 1 February, in the hope of convincing the Secretary of Agriculture to impose a moratorium instead on deregulation of Roundup Ready (RR) crops. The new pathogen appears associated with serious pervasive diseases in plants - sudden death syndrome in soybean and Goss' wilt in corn – but its suspected effects on livestock are alarming. Huber refers to “recent reports of infertility rates in dairy heifers of over 20%, and spontaneous abortions in cattle as high as 45%.” Huber writes in closing: “I have studied plant pathogens for more than 50 years. We are now seeing an unprecedented trend of increasing plant and animal diseases and disorders. This pathogen may be instrumental to understanding and solving this problem. It deserves immediate attention with significant resources to avoid a general collapse of our critical agricultural infrastructure.” Australia: There is Poison in Your Tap Water The public will be shocked to realize that what they have been told about fluoride in the water is far from the truth, and that the "fluoride", unlike that found in high grade toothpastes, is not pharmaceutical in nature but actually industrial chemical and toxic waste product, much of it from China. It is being dispersed into the water supply, where freedom of information requests obtained by Bressington show the high levels of toxicity and the presence of many poisons and even uranium, in Adelaide's water supply. Pharma's drug research costs are much lower than claimed For decades, the pharmaceutical industry has claimed that its high prices for drugs in the developed world, are justified by the very high costs of research and development (R&D). Industry-funded economists at Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development, produced a wholly artificial R&D cost of $1.3 billion for a new drug. That artificial estimate, which is widely cited by government and industry-- has served to hugely enrich the pharmaceutical industry. A just published article, Demythologizing the High Cost of Pharmaceutical Research , by Donald Light and Rebecca Warburton, debunks industry's inflated claim by dissecting the calculations in the authoritative Tufts-PhRMa supported study that concocted the extraordinary high R&D cost estimate. Light and Warburton found that the net median corporate R&D costs varied greatly: from $13 million to $204 million, depending on the kind of drug. They estimate the median net corporate R&D cost per new drug was only $59.4 million, plus the unknown cost of discovery, which varies 30 fold. This $59.4 million estimate, they point out, is in line with audited figures submitted by companies. Physicians: Prescribing Less May Improve Outcomes Excessive medications and procedures, adverse events and medical errors are endemic to medicine. In the early 1990s, surgeons were encouraged to perform quadruple bypass surgery for heart disease. Recent studies now suggest the surgery was, in many cases, a waste of time and money, improving neither morbidity nor mortality. My advice to doctors: It's OK not to prescribe anything. It's OK to listen, to do no harm, to offer compassionate and helpful living advice. It can be therapeutic to recommend abstinence from cigarettes, drugs and alcohol, to eat more nutritiously, to sustain a relationship, lose weight, volunteer, meditate, pray, walk, laugh, sing, play music and embrace kindness. Finding ways around EU herbal restrictions - Health Supreme NewsGrabs 18 February 2011 - UK: Herbal medicines will survive after ministers approve plan that bypasses EU directive The Government moved yesterday to protect consumers wanting herbal products that will disappear from many health food shops after April 30. Mr Lansley has approved a plan for the Health Professions Council to establish a register of practitioners supplying unlicensed herbal medicines, who will be required to sign up by law. Mr Lansley, in a written statement, said the Government wanted to ensure continuing access to unlicensed herbal medicines via a statutory register for practitioners ‘to meet individual patient needs’. Pharmaceutical interests went WAY over the top in trying to eliminate or at least restrict access to natural products such as supplements and herbs competing with pharma's wares. Those laws, stupidly and somewhat blindly enacted by EU legislators just aren't enforceable. Better not to make a law rather than make one that can't be enforced because it is against what people desire. It only acts to undermine any confidence we might have had at one time in those institutions... Even governments of the member states are now finding ways around enacting the restrictions. In Italy, for instance, healthy herbs will continue to be available in herb shops, they are considered food supplements. European herb directive keeps consumers in the dark “We believe consumers have the right to see which products have so far been registered, what they have in them, what their intended uses are and who has registered them. We have therefore collated the data into a single list while also releasing other lists that show the extensive range of Indian, Chinese, Tibetan and even western herbs that will be subject to the ban.” The new legislation claims to put consumer safety first making it mandatory to indicate possible side effects and interactions with other drugs on the labeling of approved herbal products. But health-conscious consumers are likely to be surprised to find a wide complement (over 100) of additive ‘nasties’ in most (but not all) of the registered products. These include the detergent sodium lauryl sulphate, the controversial sweeteners aspartame and sodium cyclamate, artificial preservatives, such as E215, E217 and E219, and various polymers, such as butylated methacrylate copolymer, polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The latter is recognised by government authorities to cause cancer in laboratory animals. Diet soda and heart, stroke risk: A link doesn't prove cause and effect A total of 2,564 people in the study were asked about their intake of sodas (among other questions) at the start of the study. After nine years, 559 cardiovascular events had occurred, and those who had reported drinking diet soda every day had a 60% higher rate of these events, which included various forms of stroke as well as heart attacks. The scientists adjusted for certain factors, such as age, sex, race, smoking, exercise, alcohol and daily calories. When they added additional factors to do with heart disease risk, such as metabolic syndrome, the risk was still 48% higher for the daily-diet-soda-drinking group. “If our results are confirmed with future studies, then it would suggest that diet soda may not be the optimal substitute for sugar-sweetened beverages for protection against vascular outcomes,” noted the study lead author, Hannah Gardener of the University of Miami School of Medicine. A link may not prove cause and effect, but it *is* a signal ... and perhaps we should pay attention. The disclaimer (no proof of cause and effect) is almost never used when the media reports on a scientific study. Why is it different this time around? Could the fact that there is a huge industry (and connected advertising revenues) behind diet drinks and sweeteners? Another instance of the immediate disclaimer: Diet soda tied to stroke risk, but reasons unclear It's far from definitive proof, but new research raises concern about diet soda, finding higher risks for stroke and heart attack among people who drink it everyday versus those who drink no soda at all. Still drinking diet soda? Diet Pepsi consists of artificially blackened water tarted up with synthetic chemicals. The references to "natural flavor" and (chemical-induced) "freshness" aside, what really gives Diet Pepsi its main flavor -- that special jolt of sweetness -- is aspartame, the famous calorie-free sugar substitute. What aspartame lacks in calories it more than makes up for in baggage. Italian researchers recently added [PDF] to a long-standing and growing body of literature pointing to aspartame's possible role as a carcinogen. Their conclusion, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, was stark: "The results of this mega-experiment indicate that [aspartame] is a multipotential carcinogenic agent, even at a daily dose of 20 mg/kg body weight, much less than the current acceptable daily intake." Diabetes Linked to Lack of Magnesium The results show that magnesium intake was inadequate in 82 percent of the diabetics studied, with the lowest levels found in those with kidney complications. Further, about two-thirds (63 percent) of the subjects had low blood levels of magnesium. Zinc can be an 'effective treatment' for common colds Taking zinc syrup, tablets or lozenges can lessen the severity and duration of the common cold, experts believe. A review of the available scientific evidence suggests taking zinc within a day of the onset of cold symptoms speeds recovery. It may also help ward off colds, say the authors of the Cochrane Systematic Review that included data from 15 trials involving 1,360 people. Why Most Published Research Findings Are False (Ioannidis' 2005 article in PLoS Medicine) In this framework, a research finding is less likely to be true when the studies conducted in a field are smaller; when effect sizes are smaller; when there is a greater number and lesser preselection of tested relationships; where there is greater flexibility in designs, definitions, outcomes, and analytical modes; when there is greater financial and other interest and prejudice; and when more teams are involved in a scientific field in chase of statistical significance. Simulations show that for most study designs and settings, it is more likely for a research claim to be false than true. Moreover, for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias. Not only doctors ... A few findings: Nearly all of the NP’s - 96 percent - reported regular contact with reps and most - 71 percent - say they received info on new drugs directly from reps some or most of the time. Meanwhile, 61 percent reported it was acceptable for drugmakers to provide small gifts and meals to clinical offices, although 93 percent said gifts had no effect on the likelihood of prescribing a highlighted drug... Padian Study Proves HIV Is Not Sexually Transmitted This is the explosive study by Dr. Nancy Padian that most people have never heard of. Dr. Padian conducted the largest study ever on sexual transmission of HIV. She tracked 175 couples over a ten year period. The yellow section was suffering from Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS), a serious plant disease that ravaged the Midwest in 2009 and ’10, driving down yields and profits. Something had caused that area of soybeans to be highly susceptible and Don had a good idea what it was. Don Huber spent 35 years as a plant pathologist at Purdue University and knows a lot about what causes green plants to turn yellow and die prematurely. He asked the seed dealer why the SDS was so severe in the one area of the field and not the other. “Did you plant something there last year that wasn’t planted in the rest of the field?” he asked. Sure enough, precisely where the severe SDS was, the dealer had grown alfalfa, which he later killed off at the end of the season by spraying a glyphosate-based herbicide (such as Roundup). The healthy part of the field, on the other hand, had been planted to sweet corn and hadn’t received glyphosate. Emergency Medicine Australasia has taken a stand against pharmaceutical advertising, with Emeritus Editor Professor George Jelinek saying: “doctors need to stop being used as agents of the drug industry.” In an editorial, Professor Jelinek argues that the marketing of drugs by the pharmaceutical industry is at odds with the mission of medical journals which should be to provide objective data. “The duty of drug companies is to make profits for their shareholders, which is in conflict with the ethical duty of doctors to provide sound, unbiased advice for their patients”, he says. Sun exposure, vitamin D may lower risk of multiple sclerosis People who spend more time in the sun and those with higher vitamin D levels may be less likely to develop multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a study published in the February 8, 2011, print issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. MS is a chronic disease of the brain and spinal cord, usually with recurrent flare-ups of symptoms. Hemp Oil and Cancer Medical marijuana is becoming more and more associated with anti-carcinogenic effects, which are responsible in preventing or delaying the development of cancer. This means that cannabinoids offer cancer patients a therapeutic option in the treatment of highly invasive cancers. Manganese in drinking water detrimental to cognitive development Bouchard then proceeded to test the children’s IQ, motor skills, impulsivity, dexterity and memory skills. The results were clear: the more children are exposed to manganese the more they have problems with motor skills and with their short and long term memory. In addition, those exposed to the higher levels of manganese have a non-verbal IQ that is on average 6.6 points lower. UK: Homeopaths to be sidelined In July 2010, a major attack was made on homeopathy by the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee. The government held that they would not, at that time, limit access to homeopathic remedies. That development was cheered by homeopaths and their patients. However, less well known was the decision to readdress the issue through other means, specifically the Review of Medicines Act 1968, which will happen shortly after 18 February 2001—less than two weeks away. Careful reading of that document leaves little room to doubt that homeopathic remedies will be squeezed and their use will be limited to a small number of off-the-shelf products or by prescription from allopathic doctors—and those doctors will be required to consider all possible allopathic treatments first, before prescribing homeopathic remedies. Canada: Calgary removes fluoride from water supply Calgary city council has voted 10-3 in favour of removing fluoride from the city's drinking water. Ald. Jim Stevenson said there's insufficient medical proof that keeping it in the water has any benefit. "We as a council have to show some leadership here. We have no right to force this right on all Calgarians. I would really question our right to put it in, but … I don't question at all our right to remove it," he said. Time Has Come to End Fluoridation Completely In January 2011, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommended reducing the levels of fluoride added to drinking water based on national survey data showing that 41% of American adolescents now have dental fluorosis (a visible sign of fluoride toxicity). The HHS has proposed reducing the level of fluoride added to water from 0.7 to 1.2 parts per million (ppm) to 0.7 ppm, and is now soliciting public comment. (Comments are due by February 14). While HHS's decision is a baby step in the right direction, it is not good enough. Even at the new recommended level, millions of infants will continue to be regularly over-exposed to fluoride, millions of American children will continue to develop dental fluorosis, and millions of Americans -- children and adults alike -- will remain at risk to the health effects caused by fluoride. The Fluoride Action Network (FAN) is calling on HHS to follow the path of western Europe and end water fluoridation completely. French dentists move away from mercury fillings Some countries – Sweden last year, and Norway, Denmark and Germany, have banned or restricted the use of mercury fillings. But not France or the UK. The European commission is due to publish the findings of its review on dental amalgam fillings in March. In a preliminary report, published online in July, the company tasked with the study, Bio Intelligence Service, recommended phasing out mercury in dental care in Europe. "Having heavy metals in your mouth is a source of toxic substances, which for some genetically predisposed patients may increase the risk of diseases such as disseminated sclerosis," says neurologist Bernard Aranda, who is "on the whole in favour of a ban". Japan Nears Final Settlement on Hepatitis B Lawsuit The Japanese government will soon reach formal agreement to settle a massive class-action lawsuit involving people who contracted hepatitis B through childhood vaccination, expected to cost up to 3.2 trillion yen ($39 billion) in damages to compensate hundreds of thousands of victims. The long-fought lawsuit, originally started in 1989, is a legacy of the time when needles and syringes were routinely reused to inoculate a number of children to save costs, a practice that persisted in Japan until 1988. Victims' groups estimate nearly half of the nation's 1.3 million hepatitis B patients and carriers had contracted the virus this way. The government's damages estimate is based on projections that a total of 33,000 patients and 400,000 carriers will seek compensation over the next 30 years. Bombshell: Antipsychotic Medications Shrink the Brain In this study, Andreasen took periodic MRI scans of 211 schizophrenia patients treated from seven years to 14 years. She found that long-term use of the old standard antipsychotics, the new atypical antipsycotics, and clozapine are all "associated with smaller brain tissue volumes." Moreover, she found that this shrinkage was dose related. The more drug a person is given, the greater the "association with "smaller grey matter volumes," she reported. Similarly, the "progressive decrement in white matter volume was most evident among patients who received more antipsychotic treatment." Finally, Andreasen reported that this shrinkage "occurs independent of illness severity and substance abuse." Those two factors--illness severity and substance abuse--had "minimal or no effects" on brain volumes. Toxic Cancer Vaccine Being Developed Will Destroy Human Fertility A vaccine being developed in conjunction with U.S. firm Celldex Therapeutics, claims to kill off the most deadly cancers including breast, bowel and cervical tumours. The problem is, it will also destroy a women’s ability to reproduce. The researchers admit that the destruction of hCG will also mean the vaccine will act as a contraceptive. However, what Professor Iles does not reveal is that since they have no protocol to study the long-term pharmacokinetics (bodily absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of the vaccine), there is no way of knowing if a women’s fertility will ever be restored or return to normal levels after completing treatment. In essence, regardless of age, these women could be left sterile for life. Associating vaccines and subsequent diseases We urgently need to establish surveillance systems that analyze diagnoses made at outpatient visits and hospitalizations for at least one year post vaccinations, so that statistically significant links can be identified and assessed for causality. A good system would have the potential to detect diseases that are less severe than those above; it could detect those associated with smaller relative risks; and could detect those with later onset post-vaccination than currently identified... VACCINE EPIDEMIC Public health officials (on both sides of the Atlantic) have lost the public trust because they have been in league with vaccine manufacturers in denying that safety problems exist. Why Plants Are (Usually) Better Than Drugs For four decades, I've been skeptical of a prevailing belief in Western medicine: when a plant shows bioactivity in humans, we must attribute that effect to a single, predominant compound in the plant. We label that the "active principle," isolate it, synthesize it, and make a pharmaceutical out of it. Then, typically, we forget about the plant. We don't study any of the other compounds in it or their complex interactions. This belief persists for two reasons. First, it makes research much easier. Single compounds can be manufactured in pure, standardized dosages, which simplifies clinical trials. (However, technology has largely solved this problem. Modern growing and processing methods make it possible to produce standardized, complex, whole-plant-based medicines. Clinical trials of these compounds have become quite sophisticated, especially in Europe.) Second, and this is clearly the major reason, it makes drugs far more profitable for drug companies. Isolating and synthesizing a single molecule allows a drug company to patent that molecule. Making slight chemical modifications allows further patent potential. Such exclusivity can be worth billions, whereas a whole plant offers little opportunity for profit. Wakefield hits back at British Medical Journal over “fraud” claims Earlier this month, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) published an editorial in which it accused Dr Andrew Wakefield of “scientific fraud” over the controversial 1998 Lancet case series, which described a new syndrome of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) in association with inflammatory bowel disease. The accusations were accompanied by a three-part series of articles by Brian Deer, the journalist who first issued the same allegations in the Sunday Times back in 2004. To us, the BMJ articles seemed like a panicked response by the medical establishment to Wakefield’s book, Callous Disregard – which was not mentioned by the BMJ nor Deer! Had they even read the book before printing their accusations? I rather believe - as I said in last week's newsgrabs, that the articles seem to be a response to Wakefield potentially swaying an attentive audience - Members of the European Parliament - to whom he talked just a month prior. The smear campaign against him heated up in December last year. His talk at the EU Parliament was given in November. Deaths have been reported in other countries where young women died or had severe complications just hours after being vaccinated against. Finnish Health Official: Swine Flu Vaccinations for Children Possibly a Mistake The Chief Medical Officer of Finland's National Public Health Institute has conceded that it may have been unnecessary to vaccinate children and young people against swine flu. Dr Terhi Kilpi told the Väli-Suomi newspaper group's Sunday newspaper supplement that perhaps the vaccine should not have been given to 5-20 year-olds. Kilpi said that she would no longer recommends the vaccination for this age group. She added that if she had known of the potential consequences, she would have not inoculated 5-20 year-olds. A major media offensive was unleashed in December 2010 to convince the world that Autism has nothing to do with vaccines. The target of the offensive: Dr. Andrew Wakefield who had blown the whistle by providing some scientific evidence in a paper he published, that several children with autism also suffered from intestinal problems and that a vaccine-specific measles virus was found in the guts of those children. This discovery had the potential of ruining a billion-dollar business, that of vaccinating potentially every child on earth with ever greater frequency fielding a barrage of ever more vaccines. Huge sums of money involved here. Wakefield was going to ruin the day. He even had the audacity of speaking at the European Parliament on the causation of Autism. The vaccine makers however were not going to give up without a fight... Andrew Wakefield's talk at the EU Parliament, which came just before a heavy press attack on Wakefield, seems to have precipitated a rather heavy reaction. The Pharma crowd has trotted out their point man journalist Deer and their commentators in high places, to make sure every one, even the members of the EU Parliament, know Wakefield can't be trusted, that his research is discredited, and that anyway he only was in this for the money... a neat trick to head off the expected backlash against Pharmaceutical manufacturers for causing - through vaccines - an AUTISM EPIDEMIC. So something had to be done ... and it was a full scale PR offensive to discredit the bearer of bad news. Vaccines were saved, or so they thought... Germany suspends payments to global health fund The country's development ministry said its pledge of euro200 million ($270 million) for 2011 will be withheld from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria pending a full investigation by Germany into the corruption that the fund's own investigators are turning up. German Development Minister Dirk Niebel said the serious questions raised in two AP articles on Sunday and Monday require a thorough investigation. "I take the allegations of corruption and breach of trust carried by media against the Global Fund very seriously and I expect that the fund will promptly clear them up," said Niebel. "I have halted all further payments to the fund until it is fully cleared up." Corruption accusations hit the Global Fund For some time there have been rumors about problems with the Global Fund, but the latest findings from the Fund's own inspectors are a shock. Huge quantities of money appear to have been siphoned off. In Mauritania, an anti-HIV program lost $4.1 million (3 million euros) - two-thirds of its total budget - through faked invoices. In Djibouti meanwhile, $5 million went missing on bills for cars and motorcycles, and a further $750,000 was simply transferred out of an account with no explanation. The inspectors also found that tens of millions of dollars worth of malaria medicines, intended to be provided free to patients, were stolen and re-sold on the black market. UK: Soil Association Threatened with Libel Action over Intensive Pig Farming Concerns When there's agribusiness money behind a venture, any and all methods to push it through will be used, including slapping legal threats on those who oppose. It's gone even further in the case of a proposed Derbyshire "farm". The Soil Association, a veteran charity promoting organic farming in the UK, has been threatened with libel. No one suggests that they've actually maligned the company trying to push the "farm" through. They're accused of raising general concerns about such an operation's effects on disease, antibiotic resistance, and animal welfare. France: Libel case over GMO ends in win for independent scientist Gilles-Eric Séralini, professor of molecular biology at the University of Caen in France, and president of the scientific council for independent research on genetic engineering (CRIIGEN), is a leading researcher into the risks of GMOs. Not surprisingly, he and his team became the target a concerted campaign of vilification, which included Monsanto, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and scientific societies representing biotechnology in France: the French Association of Plant Biotechnology (AFBV) and the French High Counsel on Biotechnology. During the trial, it transpired that Fellous, who presented himself as a ‘neutral’ scientist without personal interests, and accused those who criticise GMOs as ‘ideological’ and ‘militant’, actually owns patents through a company based in Israel. This company sells patents to corporations such as Aventis. Seralini’s lawyer showed that various other AFBV members also have links with agribusiness companies, and so their scientific impartiality and integrity came under intense scrutiny. The US Organic Elite Surrenders to Monsanto: What Now? In a cleverly worded, but profoundly misleading email sent to its customers last week, Whole Foods Market, while proclaiming their support for organics and "seed purity," gave the green light to USDA bureaucrats to approve the "conditional deregulation" of Monsanto's genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant alfalfa. While it has become more fashionable recently to question the cholesterol lowering campaign, to my knowledge, even to the present no one has put together such a well-referenced, well organized and cogent critique of the cholesterol lowering campaign as Dr. Ravnskov. Personally, this was the first book I read which led me to begin to question much of the conventional medical wisdom I had been taught in medical school and beyond. If cholesterol lowering for heart disease may be in error, what other precepts of modern medicine might not be equally idolatrous? I also suspected when I first heard of this book, that despite the author's credentials it would almost certainly be laughably bad, well I was in for a surprise. Mainstream medicine, though it knows better, often presents cholesterol as some unmitigated evil which by happenstance exists only to predispose one to heart disease. If it only could be eliminated, there would be no more heart disease. A few have been calling for "debt forgiveness," a remedy analogous to cancer surgery. That may be a good start, but even that does no go far enough. We can excise the cancer, but if we do not recognize and eliminate its fundamental cause it will simply grow back. We can restart the game of Monopoly, but the outcome of the next round will be very much like that of the previous round unless we change the rules -- or choose to play a different game. Vitamin C: A Potential Life-saving Treatment For Sepsis Physicians caring for patients with sepsis may soon have a new safe and cost-effective treatment for this life-threatening illness. Research led by Dr. Karel Tyml and his colleagues at The University of Western Ontario and Lawson Health Research Institute have found that vitamin C can not only prevent the onset of sepsis, but can reverse the disease. The potential benefit of this treatment is substantial. "Vitamin C is cheap and safe. Previous studies have shown that it can be injected intravenously into patients with no side effects," says Dr. Tyml. "It has the potential to significantly improve the outcome of sepsis patients world-wide. This could be especially beneficially in developing countries where sepsis is more common and expensive treatments are not affordable." Vitamin E may increase life expectancy of some men Among all analyzed participants, vitamin E had no effect on mortality when participants were 65 to 70 years old, but reduced mortality by 24% when participants were 71 or older. Among 2,284 men with dietary vitamin C intake above the median who smoked less than a pack of cigarettes per day, vitamin E extended life-span by two years at the upper limit of the follow-up age span. In the other participants, consisting of 80% of the cohort, vitamin E did not affect mortality, which shows that vitamin E is no panacea for extending life expectancy. The researchers concluded that "if vitamin E influences the life-span, it is possible that a benefit on the oldest participants might be camouflaged by the large middle-aged majority of study participants". Therefore, they propose that it might be useful to analyze the effect of vitamin E supplementation in large controlled trials by the age of the participant at the follow-up and not just by the time after randomization that has been customary. Danger Of Bone Cancer From Fluoride In Toothpaste, Drinking Water In 1977, the National Academy of Sciences expressed concerns on the strong relation between the fluoridation of drinking water and risks of bone cancer to young boys, Dr. Epstein points out. A decade later, the International Agency for Research on Cancer reported that fluorides in drinking water induced bone cancer in rats. This finding was confirmed by the National Toxicology Program in its 1989, 1990, and 1991 reports. Millions taking statins 'needlessly' An authoritative review shows there is little evidence that the cholesterol-lowering drugs protect people who are not already at a high risk of heart disease. As a result, the NHS is wasting large amounts of money on giving the drugs to the “worried well”, the researchers warn. In some cases, the side-effects of taking statins could outweigh the benefits, they say. A number of studies have linked statins to liver problems, acute kidney failure and muscle damage. Pharma has hard-sold statin drugs for years - even after the cholesterol hypothesis has failed to hold up under scientific scrutiny. The immediate handling was to distinguish between "good cholesterol" and "bad cholesterol" but even this ruse is falling apart. Cholesterol is a vitally needed molecule in the human organism and it is majorly manufactured by the liver. That is several times cheaper than energy from fossil fuel sources such as coal or natural gas. According to Rossi, the demonstrated device shown last Friday is their industrial product that is claimed to be reliable and safe. In normal operation it would produce 8 units of output for every unit of input. Higher levels of output are possible, but can be dangerous. They will soon start serial production of their modules.
