Permanent digestive changes after colon resection - I had 8" of my colon removed 3 yrs ago just above my rectum.
I am posting this in the hopes it will be useful info to others. One thing I've experienced is the lack of info about colon resections and what to expect. Although I am able to research and understand medical/scientific publications, there was little info available that was helpful to me.
Right after the surgery--They told me to go back to a regular diet on day 2. ha ha. No way could I tolerate that. I hate tiny snacks of soft foods for weeks. Otherwise I'd be constipated or have bad diarrhea. Couldn't tolerate dairy, fiber or meat at all.
Long term--I still can't digest meat or rice in any quantity. Dairy I can eat in very small amounts. I have to eat large amounts of "good fats" in order to prevent constipation and have skin that doesn't look like an apple-head doll. I don't gain weight from the high fat diet either, even though I am not physically active. My assumption is I am not really digesting all the fat.
I have to take stool softeners 2x a week and sometimes other laxatives, just to function.
If I eat 3 meals a day I will definitely get constipated. I need to split my food into 6 small meals a day or more.
None of this is the end of the world by any means, but it is something I need to be aware of and follow.
Dr's don't care they are only concerned w/treatment - My dad died last month from S4 colorectal cancer, he was 60 yrs old. I'll skip past all the red tape we went through and everything that happened during treatment and just say that as a 35yr old adult male myself I tried getting a colonoscopy and the Dr's have tried to deter me away from it saying I'm too young and that just because I have a history in family that it's not cause for concern. I even told him that I had a few symptoms, he eventually referred me to a Gastroenterologist but I'll have to wait several weeks, perhaps even months before I'll get scheduled for certain. I say DON'T bother with Chemo or any of that because you will just have more illness and die just the same. The proof is there, when are people going to WAKE-UP !!!
Stop being brainwashed and told what to do, it's our body the govt shouldn't force that upon us too!
Attention please working cancer treatment protocol - We want to inform you about a new way to treat cancer using simple, cheap and non-toxic supplements. This treatment protocol only uses compounds from fruits and vegetables and is very potent. If you don't believe it then try it and if it doesn't work we pay you $100. If it does work you must pay us $100. All instructions must be followed for this treatment protocol to work. Please print this page.
Flavonoid Cancer Treatment Protocol
1 Dissolve 500 mg ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in 0.5 L water in a bottle.2 Open up a capsule containing 500 mg Quercetin and sprinkle this in this water. Shake well.3 If everything goes well you will see a yellow solution. The mix is ready for consumption. Drink very slowly (take a sip).
If there are any side effects then please report this to your doctor. Please be informed that tumor lysis syndrome may be a possible complication of cancer treatment including this one. Our medical disclaimer states that you are responsible for your actions. This treatment protocol is potent stuff, it's a form of chemotherapy. Doctor's supervision recommended.
You can get these cheap supplements anywhere (from vitamin stores or internet). You can also use supplements that have quercetin and ascorbic acid combined (don't forget to dissolve content in 0.5 L of water in a bottle). The quercetin needs to be dissolved to improve absorption. You don't have to use exactly 500 mg quercetin and 500 mg ascorbic acid, 250 mg quercetin and 700 mg ascorbic acid for example is possible as well. Combined with chemotherapy and radiation this treatment protocol works 80+ times better, because quercetin uses free radicals to kill cancer cells and chemotherapy+radiation delivers these free radicals. We recommend you to start with a low dosage for safety.
Please contact us to tell us about how well this cancer treatment protocol worked. Also report any side effects that you may have encountered. For this and all other remarks email: quercetinadvocacy@hotmail.com

Help For Extreme Constipation - I am a caregiver for someone in stage 3 of colon cancer in radiation and chemo who has acute constipation and cramping pain. The doctors just keep giving him more pain meds which cause more constipation. Laxatives no longer help. Anyone with any ideas or experiences which may have helped. Please reply.
Was started on Effexor for neuropathic pain from Oxaliplatin - My doctor prescribed it yesterday for days 2 to 11 of the chemo cycle! He had an article that was recently published showeing that Effexor was helpful 100% of the time in about a third of the patients trialed on and about 50% in the remainder of the patients. Has anyone else been put on it for the neuropathic pain and cold intolerance? Did it work for you?
Thanks, Debe
Colo/Rectal Cancer 2 weeks into treatment - I had my first colonoscopy over a year ago and a polyp was removed that had cancer on the top of it. They scheduled for a second one 3 mos later. This one came up clean so now I'm on one year schedule.
I was told that I did have a suspicious polyp at the bend of the rectum and colon which he could not get with the normal tube. I was convinced to have a resection of that area to make sure. They must really have been suspicious because it came back as cancerous and stage III because it was also in 1 of the 12 lymph nodes removed.
P.S. One of the sympthoms was extreme diarrhea.
Now I am on chemo 5fu and radiation treatments for 28 days. Up until this weekend I had no problem with the chemo. This weekend I finally got nauseous and threw up. What I am most concerned with I haven't seen anything written about. After half of the radiation I am suffering miserably. My entire bottom, vagina, anus and all surrounding area is so raw. It has even turned black! My piles are excruitiang and it feels as though I am burning on the inside of my rectum as well when water passes out there. I was told I can take up to 10 Immodium id, which I have with little to no relief. If I put anything at all in my mouth, including water or juice I immediately start gettting bad cramps traveling down my intestines until I cannot control getting to the bathroom in time for another explosive diarrhea.
While trying to read and research I keep wondering if there gets to be a point where more damage is being done then the benefit. I just don't know. All I know is that I still have 14 more days and if there continues to be any further cummulative effects I just won't be able to take it.]
I have received cream, lydocaine, prep h, anusol, aloe vera( which seems to help the most) I cannot wipe without the liquid they gave me as if feels as though I were trying to wipe glass in those areas and vicadin. None of this really helps.
Please give me some encouragment or advice how to make it through the next 14 days.
Does this sound normal to any of you who had a similar treatment?

Goblet cell carcinoid with peritoneal carcinamatosis - Stage IV - I'd love to find someone out there with appendix cancer. I have goblet cell carcinoid and am aware there are many different kinds of appendix cancer even though the dang stuff is so rare.
I had my first surgery Christmas Eve 2009, followed by the HIPEC procedure in March and now six months of systemic chemotherapy.
My last two CT scans are clear. My doctor says I'm now in remission. Can it be true?
Would love to find others with goblet cell carcinoid to discuss this disease.

reaccurance/ CEA - HI, some of you know me on here as irishgirl 105. I was Dx with colon ca with mets to the liver in Oct.09, by Sept.my scan was clear, so we backed offand did avastin, and watched my CEA which dropped to normal values, and stayed there for over a year.DON "T COUNT ON JUST A BLOOD TEST. Mine is still normal but my PET scan last week showed reacurrance in the liver. For those of you that pray, I'm asking for your prayers. It will be tougher this time around, both physically, and emmotionally.
State IV colon cancer - I was diagnoised July 2008 with IV colon cancer which has metastes to my liver. I've done all the chemos available. The last being Erbitux which worked for three months. Tried having a liver resection but they opened me up and found several small seedings. I really don't know where to go next. i'm from a very small, northern new york town. The closes city is 75 miles away. I've been looking at other facilities like Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Dana Farber, and the Mayo clinci just to name a few. I would like some input from anyone. Thanks, Laura
Weakness caused by dehydration - Today I went into the cancer center for my blood work (between week of chemo) and mentioned that I was feeling so very weak and it felt like my blood sugar was low but I had checked it and it was normal. The doctor said it was probably dehydration and I got a liter of IV fluids. The difference I felt after the fluids was amazing. I am a nurse and missed this completely. I was looking at my lab work and seeing that it wasnt so overly out of wack that I didnt understand why I felt weak....but now I know.
positive and negetive biopsies - I have recently had a biopsy in the rectal region which came out positive. Just to get doubly sure I got a 2nd biopsy done which came negative. After this several tests have been done including colorectal ultrasound test and all points to negative. None the less the 1st biopsy is positive and there is no doubt about it. We ruled out any chances of tissue mix up in the lab as there were no other similar biopsy done on that day in that lab. Could it be a case of false positive? The surgery required for this is a life long colostomy.
CEA tumor markers - HI,I am not sure about the CEA test. I show 0.9 for my CEA. This hasn't changed since I had first been diagnosed with rectal cancer in August. I went through 6 weeks of chemo/radiation and the CEA was the same after. I did have surgery and am now on Folfox6 for 4-6 months. Is 0.9 high or low. It seems to be low but I'm confused. Does anyone understand the markers??? Thank you

Free cancer treatment?
Erbitux frequency & side effects-Help - Hello All, I am starting folfiri with 5fu & Erbitux on Wednesday after a port is put in, it is suggested by a second opinion (Dr. Lenz USC) that I have a double dose of Erbitux once every 14 days with the chemo. My Onc wants me to do the protocol, Erbitux every 7. Any thoughts? Also, I have had Erbitux for the last 3 weeks with another chemo I was doing and I have had side effects of teenage acne like breakouts all over face, chest, neck and back. Dr. prescribed clindamycin, helping but has a drying effect. I have used bag balm for years treating dryness, minor scrapes and such, I used bag balm to try and correct this, and to my surprise it is not working. Hum, what to use? Any thoughts? Thanks, Melissa
Erbitux +CP11? are U taking it? side effects??? - After 6 years in a roller coaster, 2 surgeries, colon and liver, several chemo treatments , trials, almost exhausted all options..... here I go again Erbitux + CP11, I'm terrified with the acne and rash side effects and loosing my hair again for the 4th time!
Please, did you take this treatment? how bad and disfiguring the acne is.
I'm felling defeated and depressed, on top of all the nausea, constipation, mouth sore, numbness on feet and hands ( from oxplatin) .I fell like a wreck, but I don't want to look like a one.....
Folfox 6 - After Effects - EYE PAIN - Condition: Colon Cancer, Stage 2, High Risk (after surgery)
I have just completed my first treatment (first of 12 over 6 months). Day 1 - I receive at Hospital...them wear it home for the 2nd days treatment at home.
Immediately after my first treatment at Hospital, as I arrived at home, I sneezed and got stabbing pains in both eyeballs. They lasted approximately 5 - 6 seconds then receded. Later, when I coughed, I got the same pain in one eyeball. Since then only smaller twinges until now they seem to have stopped, leaving me with a dull discomfort in both eyes.
I assumed it was from Oxaliplatin however one nurse suggested it could be from the Anti Nausea meds I received just prior to treatment.....Doctor now tells me to go see an Eye Doctor.
Has Anyone else experienced EYE PAIN during treatment? If so I would be very interested in hearing from you. I am concerned that there could be a residual effect as treatments progress.

How to make it better? - My fiance has colon cancer and had a ressection in Jan '11, now he is doing chemo, Folfox, he had his first round started last Tuesday and disconnected today. The first day he was great, no reactions at all until about 3 in the morning the 2 day having the bulb. He got very sick, took the pill for naseau but it didn't work, he also has developed this extreme anxiousness around the time he is trying to go to sleep, those pills don't work either. I knew going into this, I did so much research, that this was no day at the park but how am I suppossed to watch this man that I love more than anything in this world, a man who has always been my provider, my protecter just be so miserable. We have been together for a little over 7 years and I have never seen a day when he didn't smile at all, until today. It breaks my heart. Now I am trying to get him to eat to get his strength but he is afraid everything will make his sick. I am sure thare are a lot of people out here that have gone through this so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to let me know, I will take any ideas with much appreciation. I just keep praying, so please if you believe like I do, just a little prayer would be wonderful. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
